Equal and Opposite Reaction

Equal and Opposite Reaction explores the external factors in our lives that can mould who we become. This body of work aims to capture various perceptions that are used to internalise these factors. Inspired by the Australian landscape as well as the oriental culture of my neighbourhood, this body of work reflects the multicultural society I was raised in. Drawing from the traditional Chinese philosophy of Yin and Yang, many of my works explore the balance that exists in all things, from nature and urbanisation to joy and depression.

Marc Quinn and his depiction of organic material heavily influence my sculptural work. Oliver Herring provided much insight, particularly his ability to reconstruct reality using photographs. British/Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare’s unique style contributed to my fashion piece. Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama influenced my symbolic use of circles, such as in Dismissal. Dismissal and Ying and Yang are examples of my digital video manipulation, applying techniques I have developed during this course. My sculptures contain elements of digital work resulting in a hybrid of the two mediums. Portraiture is used to convey people’s stories and depict perspective.

Songs of Innocence and Experience was inspired by pop culture icons, Lady Gaga and Madonna as well as the religious references in William Blake’s body of work. Songs of Innocence and Experience is the most personal refection of myself as it explores the impact my religious upbringing combined with the saturating effect of today’s media has had on who I have become.

The biggest challenge I have faced in my two-year journey has been my early struggle with technical skill. Developing an affinity for installation and sculptural form, many of my works use origami techniques. This helped me link my body of work, depict the fragility of nature and connect to my cultural background.
